Advanced Factory Optimization Tips

Once you have the basics of factory automation down, the next challenge is optimization. Efficient factories produce more with less, freeing up power, space, and resources for expansion. This guide covers advanced techniques for squeezing maximum output from your production lines.

Production Ratio Optimization

The most common factory inefficiency is mismatched production ratios. If your Smelters produce bars twice as fast as your Fabricators consume them, you have wasted half your smelting capacity. To optimize, count the cycle times of each building and calculate how many of each type you need to maintain continuous flow. For example, if a Smelter completes a cycle every 10 seconds and a Fabricator takes 15 seconds, you need roughly 2 Smelters for every 3 Fabricators to maintain balanced throughput.

Parallel Processing Lines

Instead of running one long chain from extractor to final product, build parallel processing lines that can operate independently. If one line goes down (due to a power issue or resource depletion), the others continue running. This redundancy is especially important for critical products like Basic Building Material, which you need constantly for construction and ammo crafting.

Temperature Management

Buildings generate heat during operation. Defense Turrets produce 30 temperature each. Clustered processing buildings can create localized heat zones. While temperature management is less critical than power management, overheating areas can affect building efficiency. Spread out heat-generating buildings and use open layouts to dissipate temperature buildup.

Multi-Chain Convergence

Late-game recipes at the Mega Press and Assembler require inputs from multiple different production chains. For example, a single product might need Titanium Rods, Wolfram Wire, Ceramics, and Helium-3 derivatives. Design your factory so that these multi-input buildings are centrally located with rail lines converging from each separate production chain. Use Storage Depots as buffers at the convergence point to prevent one slow chain from starving the building.

Using the Analyzing Station for Data Points

The Analyzing Station converts items into Data Points, which can be spent at the Corporate Terminal for corporation progression or at the Recipe Station for new recipes. Biofacts, Ignitium, and certain other items yield significant Data Points. Set up a dedicated rail line from your storage to an Analyzing Station to continuously convert surplus items into Data Points. This is an efficient alternative to manufacturing specific delivery items for corporation leveling.

Scaling for Corporation Deliveries

The Orbital Cargo Launcher sends manufactured goods into orbit to fulfill corporation delivery requirements. Higher corporation levels require larger quantities of more complex items. Plan your factory expansion around the delivery requirements of the corporation levels you are targeting. Having multiple Orbital Cargo Launchers lets you queue up deliveries for different corporations simultaneously, rather than waiting for one delivery to complete before starting the next.
