Rail System and Logistics Guide
Date Published

The rail system is the circulatory system of your factory. It moves items between buildings and distributes power across your entire base. Mastering rail routing and logistics is essential for scaling from a small starter base to a sprawling industrial complex. This guide covers everything from basic connections to advanced logistics.
Rail Basics
Rails are one-directional transport lines that carry items from output sockets to input sockets. Every building that produces items has output sockets, and every building that consumes items has input sockets. Rail connections must respect this directionality. If an item needs to travel from Building A to Building B, you need a rail from A's output to B's input.
Rails serve a dual purpose: item transport and power distribution. Any building connected to the rail network receives power from generators on the same network. This means you do not need separate power cables. However, it also means a disconnected rail segment creates an isolated power zone.
Planning Your Rail Layout
Good rail design prevents bottlenecks and makes future expansion easier. A hub-and-spoke pattern works well: place your processing buildings in a central hub, then run rail spokes outward to extraction points. Keep rail paths short and direct where possible, since longer rails mean longer transport times. Avoid crossing rails unnecessarily because untangling spaghetti rail networks later is extremely tedious.
Advanced Logistics Buildings
As you progress through Clever Robotics Corporation levels, you unlock advanced logistics buildings that transform your transport capabilities. Drone Rails provide faster item transport over longer distances. Building Drones automate construction tasks. Cargo Dispatchers allow you to route specific items to specific destinations, preventing the wrong materials from clogging a production line. Teleporters enable instant long-distance transport, bypassing the limitations of physical rail routes entirely.
Clever Robotics Corporation
Clever Robotics is the corporation dedicated to logistics and automation. Leveling it unlocks Drone Junctions, Cargo Dispatchers, Teleporters, and ultimately the Superconductor production chain. If you find yourself spending more time managing item routing than actually playing the game, investing in Clever Robotics will solve many of those problems. The Superconductor is also a top-tier component required for the most advanced recipes in the game.
Common Rail Mistakes
The most common mistake is connecting a rail backward, sending items in the wrong direction. Always check the direction arrows before finalizing a connection. Another frequent issue is creating loops where items circle endlessly without reaching their destination. If a building is not receiving items it should be getting, trace the rail path from source to destination and look for direction errors or missing connections. Finally, avoid overloading a single rail line with too many different item types, as this can cause congestion.
