Combat Tips and Tricks for Surviving Vermin Swarms
Date Published

Combat in StarRupture is not just about having good aim. Smart positioning, ammunition management, and understanding enemy behaviors are what keep you alive when the swarms intensify. This guide collects the most important combat tips and tactics from experienced players.
Understanding Death Penalties
Death in StarRupture has real consequences. All primary weapons (Assault Rifle, Shotgun, LMG) are lost when you die. Only your Pistol, Grenades, Mining Tool, and Medtool are kept. This means dying with a fully modded MAR-9 Phantom equipped is a major setback. Before venturing into dangerous areas, ask yourself whether the risk is worth the potential weapon loss. If you are carrying expensive gear, play more conservatively.
Shield Mechanics
Your shield is a regenerating damage buffer that sits on top of your health pool. It absorbs incoming damage before your health takes a hit. The most dangerous threat to your shield comes from Exploders, whose infectious fog cloud disables shields entirely and buffs nearby Vermin speed. If your shield goes down during a wave fight, retreat to a safe distance and wait for it to regenerate before re-engaging. Shieldgiver LEMs can increase your maximum shield value.
Positioning and Movement
Never stand still during combat. Vermin are melee-focused and will surround you if you stop moving. Use slides and sprints to create distance, then turn and fire. The Slidegiver LEM (+70% stamina regen during slides) and Runner LEM (+35% stamina regen) are extremely valuable for combat mobility.
Elevated platforms give you a significant advantage. Vermin have to path around structures to reach you, buying time for you and your turrets to thin the herd. Build shooting platforms near your base perimeter for Wave Warning defense.
Ammo Management
Ammunition is crafted from resources, and each weapon type has different material costs. Pistol Ammo costs just 7 Basic Building Material per clip. Standard Ammo for the Phantom costs 9 Basic Building Material + 2 Wolfram Powder. Shotgun Ammo costs 10 Basic Building Material + 3 Calcium Powder. Heavy Ammo for the GRIM costs 12 Basic Building Material + 3 Titanium Rods. Always keep a stockpile of ammo crafted before Wave Warning phases begin. Running out of ammo mid-fight with nothing but a Mining Tool is a common way new players die.
Target Priority During Waves
When fighting mixed waves, kill targets in this order: Exploders first (their shield-disable and speed-buff fog is the most dangerous mechanic in the game), then Flingers (long-range toxic bombs chip you down), then Spitters (toxicity buildup), then Slashers and Bladers (melee threats), and finally Swarmers and Young Slashers (low priority, handle with grenades or turrets). Goliaths are engaged last since they require focused attention and flanking.
Using Grenades Effectively
Grenades are Tier S for a reason. They deal massive AoE damage and recharge through kills, so using them actually generates more grenade charges. Throw grenades into the densest cluster of enemies you can find, then clean up survivors with gunfire. The kills from the grenade help recharge it for the next throw. In heavy wave fights, a skilled grenade user can maintain near-continuous grenade availability.
Co-op Combat Coordination
In multiplayer sessions, coordinate roles during wave defense. One player on Medtool duty keeps the team healed. One player focuses on Exploders and Flingers at range with the Phantom. One player handles close-range threats with the Shotgun. And everyone throws grenades into the biggest clusters. Cover each other's reloads and call out Goliath positions so the team can coordinate flanking maneuvers.
